Are you tired of seeing "Made in China" (or elsewhere abroad) on every label of every item you intend to buy in South Africa? This blog aims to assist readers in finding items made in South Africa. Please help by letting us know of any great SA-made (preferably eco-friendly) items we can add to this blog.

Sunumbra Sunscreen

Boy was I glad to find out about this locally developed, formulated and manufactured eco-friendly sunscreen (Thanks Caron)!  So far I know about 3 stockists: Faithful-to-Nature (online shop), Tocara Skin & Body Science (Cape Town), and Soaring Free Superfoods (Cape Town - 13 Bell Crescent | Westlake Business Park | Tokai ).

Men's Underwear & Socks

Found these Jockey underwear at Edgars.  100% cotton and Made in SA.  I got the socks there too.. also cotton and made in SA.  Can't recall if they were Jockey, but I think they might have been.  My hubby is set in his ways when it comes to his choice in underclothes, but even he loves these!

Jams / Preserves

I know.. we should really make our own... jams have become so expensive to buy.  But, if you lack the time (and/or talent/fruit) and can't do without, then you might as well buy the ones that are a tiny bit more expensive, but produced locally. Here is one example.

Teas

Lately I have been seeing a lot of local teas on offer, not only at Woolies, but also at PNP.  Some are not much more expensive than the average tea.  I've tasted the pnp one pictured here and it is great!

Shampoo & Conditioner

For some time now I have been searching for a new shampoo / conditioner and in the process have tried quite a few.  I have completely fallen in love with The Victoria Garden's Wild Basil & Rooibos Shampoo.  It is perfect for my hair type (oily/fine), but works well also for other hair types.  This shampoo is not only organic (i.e. ex all those nasty chemicals in normal shampoos), it is also Made in South Africa!  Another organic 'made in SA' Shampoo/conditioner (although slightly more expensive) is Pure Beginnings.  I also like this shampoo, but think it is more suited to persons with normal to dry hair.  You can buy both of these on-line at Faithful To Nature.

Make-up

I've finally found local make-up that is not only reasonably priced, but also all natural (no petrochemicals, lead and other harmful ingredients and it's also not tested on animals)!  "...Inthusiasm make-up will not clog pores and has virtually no allergy risk. Broad spectrum UVB and UVA protection, and is water resistant. Composed of minerals that cannot support bacteria, is environmentally aware and is not tested on animals. The Inthusiasm make-up forms a filter that allows your skin to breath while protecting it from air pollutants." Source: Faithful to Nature.

So far, I have tried the eyeshadow and mascara and am extremely happy with both!

Spices and stock

I make use of spices every single day in my cooking and boy was I shocked to find out that most of them contain MSG!  I've always been so proud that I hardly ever snack on crisps/chips, especially due to their MSG content and here I am spicing my food and making my 'healthy' soups with it!

Well, I'm glad to report that I have now found a range of spices, seasoning, stock and gravy powder that is made in SA (proudly Capetonian in fact!) and also seems to not contain any harmful or questionable ingredients (please correct me if I am wrong! - see the faq section of Ina Paarman's website for more info).  Okay, so my mom and I agree that some of the seasoning mixes are a bit heavy on the salt, but at least most of it is sea salt and we use it in place of salt and in moderation which can't be so bad.  So, I'm now an Ina Paarman convert!  My favourite is the lemon & black pepper seasoning... packed with flavour and so useful in all sorts of dishes!  Let us know if you know of any other natural spice/seasoning alternatives that are Made in SA. [sorry if this sounded like an advert and please remember to always check the ingredients on packaging yourself!]

Undies (Ladies)

There is nothing worse than cheap import panties.  Usually made of blends constituting mostly synthetic fibres (plastics), they become shabby in no time.  I found Playtex 100% cotton panties / undies made in SA at Edgars.

These "Shelley" ladies long sleeved thermal tops are Made in South Africa.

tights / leggings (winter)

I found these ladies winter cable tights / leggings at Due South (various colours).  They are made in South Africa 'from imported fabric' (Brand: Falke).

Coarse Sea Salt

I found this salt at PnP.  It's reasonably priced and Made in Veldrift on SA's west coast.  The label says: "Made by using the sun's energy"..."Khoisan Trading's pristine sea brine is pumped from an underground seawater lake (aquifer) on the shores of St Helena Bay on the West Coast of South Africa"..."The sea water filters through beds of shell, adding calcium, making our natural salt so special.  This pure, unpolluted brine is over 400 years old and has a most distinctive and memorable taste."

Jeans

The beauty about jeans is the older they get, the better they get, but eventually the time to buy a new pair will arrive.  I recently had a look at the labels of designer and non-designer jeans sold in local retailers and could not find a single pair 'Made in South Africa'.  I then learned that there is a Levi factory in South Africa (find out more here: http://www.levi.co.za/AboutUs/Profile.aspx.  Okay, so the company isn't South African and the material doesn't come from South Africa, but at least the jeans are made in South Africa.  If anyone knows of jeans made from SA material and manufactured locally, please let us know so that we can support! Be warned, when shopping for Levi jeans, remember to check the label.  Major retailers get stock from the local Levi factory and from abroad so be certain you buy the one labelled "Made in South Africa"! :)

UPDATE: I have struggled to find ladies Levis jeans made in sa and have even enquired at Levis outlets.  It seems most of the jeans the local factory makes is for men.  I was told that this is changing, but who knows.

FURTHER UPDATE:
REPUBLIC 8 JEANS - Check out this local company selling jeans 'Made in SA'.  Again, fabric is imported, but at least they are made locally. FURTHER UPDATE: The local Levis factory is now turning out ladies denims! I found several pairs 'made in sa' at my local Edgars (May 2012).
